Blog #5 Let the Mayhem begin!

Hello welcome back to my blog, like I mentioned in my last one. I was going to post another one today and what I have for you is a rhetorical analysis of an Allstate commercial. Specifically the Tailgater Mayhem ad. I'm going to try my best to analyze this ad and try to break it down so we can get a better understanding of what makes this ad successful and funny. Lets start off with the actor, the main lead of this ad.

The ad starts of  with a guy who is wearing a suit with blue stripes painted on his cheeks with a bandaged, he reminds me of what an 80's action star would look like. He is seen driving a car getting ready to tailgate a poor innocent person because tailgating gets him ready for football. The main actor has this charm that draws me in and I can't fully explain it, maybe its his cool and calm voice with his mischievous laugh or maybe its the joke he made in the beginning of the video. I've seen a couple of these ads and now every time I see him, I know he is about to cause some "mayhem." I feel the purpose of this ad to have you relate to the person who gets in the accident because of his tailgating and to have a good laugh at the main character.

Anyone would be stressed if and when a car gets this close to your car and not letting up. As he states in the video you're going to focus on the tailgater and not what is in front of you and by the time you look back, it's already too late as you most likely will crash into another car. Now you have to deal with the person you hit and have to go through your insurance company. According to the man or I should say Allstate, they should be able to cover that and that's why they want you to sign up with their insurance plan so you can avoid mayhem like this and not have to worry about it. The last thing we see on this ad is the main actor drive past the wreck he caused without a care in the world and talks about how you should get Allstate and he ends off the ad with a mischievous laugh, most likely on his way to cause more trouble. I think what makes this ad funny, at least to me is the main actor and the person he was tailgating. The face the person that is getting tailgated makes a really funny face right before impact followed by the main actor somehow reacting fast enough to not get caught into the accident as well despite him almost touching the persons back bumper.

I think that's all I can analyze out of this ad, I hope you enjoyed my analysis and I hope you enjoy the ad when you watch it! I think these are by far one of my favorite ads they have done and I can only hope for more to be made. This will be my last blog for the day, I will see you next time and be safe out there from guys looking to cause mayhem!

  1. I chose the same advertisement video. The driver's attention was focused on the tailgater that he crashed into the vehicle in front of him. It basically shows us that we should have insurance or get insurance with Allstate as anything can happen.

  2. Hey Tristan! Amazing review on the commercial. Your blog is extremely detailed, and I was able to put myself in the situation and understand the full meaning of the commercial.
